M A Utilities (MAU) is a civil engineering contractor which specialises in utility installations, primarily in the gas sector. We carry out all of our own reinstatement work to a very high standard. Our highly skilled workforce is also experienced in the installation of other utilities, such as water, electricity and telecommunications.
MAU is able to excavate, install utilities and reinstate on a range of projects – housing, infrastructure, road and rail included. We carry out work directly for utility distribution networks. We also offer a range of groundworks services, such as excavations, drainage, roads, pathways and car parks.
In addition, MAU offers support services to construction contractors, such as the provision of plant and the clearing of spoil.

Who we work with
MAU’s primary business is as a direct service provider to Northern Gas Networks (NGN). MAU replaces and maintains gas main pipelines in NGN’s network.
NGN delivers gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses in the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire, through its vast network of pipelines. NGN is committed to putting more than 3,800 kilometres of new pipes in the ground by 2021. This represents expenditure of £1bn over 8 years. It owns and maintains more than 37,000km of pipes.
MAU works closely with NGN to manage everything that is involved in the gas mains replacement work, from planning to construction to closing up and clearing the site when the job is complete.
Since we started working with NGN in 2011, our workforce has doubled and we have benefitted from a great deal of support and training opportunities. Having such a positive relationship is definitely a two way street. The work we do with NGN has given us job security and enabled us to grow, which drives us to do the best job possible for them.
MAU has consistently been ranked as one of NGN’s top service providers. In 2014, MAU was top ranked service provider in the whole of NGN’s network. Scores are rated against a wide range of criteria, across the key headings of performance targets, safety and customer feedback. In 2015, MAU was NGN’s top performing service provider for customer satisfaction.
